The history of the area can be traced back to the 8th century b.c., when number of inhabitants, originating from Halkida and Eretria, arrived and set up a settlement. Sani became one of the most important cities in the region in the 5th century b.c. Eventually the kingdom of Olynthos, the “Koinon of Halkideon” was dissolved by the Spartans in 379 b.c. Some recent excavations at the caves of Petralona have estimated that the origins of Halkidiki (halkidiki) date back some 700,000 years ago. Palaeontologists have found evidence that the oldest recorded control fire was started in these caves and that man could be traced back to 250,000 years, with the finding of a skull from this period.
The region has a rich history in mythology as well as palaeontology, with Kassandra having the original meaning of Phlegra, meaning “place of fire”. It was believed that the lands were home to giants that challenged the Gods of Mount Olympus and tried to drive them from their homes on the great mountain. A legend tells of the “Earthquake” giant that was crushed by a thrown rock, by one of the Gods, and is now buried in Kassandra. However, not being killed, the great giant tries to free himself. At the other side of the peninsulas the famous Mount Athos is named after the giant of the same name. During a famous battle he was known to have thrown the mountain at the Gods in an attempt to beat them.
Three of the fourteen villas have been named after the nine muses of Greek mythology. These muses were the daughters of Zeus, and they preside over the arts and sciences, inspire all artists, especially poets, philosophers, and musicians. The three villas named after the muses are Erato, of love poetry, Urania, of astrology and Thalia of comedy.
The earliest historical record of Halkidiki recorded was from Herodotus. Found in his writings of the Persian Wars, the great father of history countlessly mentions Halkidiki with great topographical and historical verse. Describing the terrible storm at Athos that destroyed the fleet of Mardonius’ fleet. The digging of the canal by Xerxes at the peninsula of Isthmus. Such history follows through the centuries of Halkidiki with even more recent evens such as being the stronghold of the Macedonian struggle. Many people joined with Pavlos Melas to triumph and see Macedonia free once again in early October 1912, almost 20 days earlier than Thessaloniki.
After 1922, the history of Halkidiki entered a new phase. Thousands of refugees from Asia Minor, Thrace (Thraki) and Bulgaria settled on the land. Today, almost 75 years after its third colonisation (the first in the 8th and 7th cent. B.C., the second during the Roman years and the third in 1922), Halkidiki is undergoing a unique economic development with the prospect of becoming one of the model tourist centres of Europe.
